We investigated allegations of antisemitism in the Labour Party.

What this covers

We looked at:

• whether the Labour Party has committed unlawful acts, through the actions of its employees or agents
• whether the Party has handled antisemitism complaints in a lawful, efficient and effective way
• whether the Rule Book and the Party’s complaint handling processes have enabled or could enable it to deal with antisemitism complaints efficiently and effectively, including whether appropriate sanctions have been or could be applied
• the steps taken by the Party to implement the recommendations made in the Chakrabarti, Royall and Home Affairs Select Committee reports

Why we are involved

We contacted the Labour Party after receiving a number of complaints about allegations of antisemitism in the Party.

We considered the Labour Party’s response carefully and opened a formal investigation using our powers under the Equality Act.

The result

Our investigation found that the Labour Party has committed unlawful acts.

We have published a report about our findings, including our recommendations for change.

The Labour Party is now legally obliged to draft an action plan to tackle the unlawful act findings we made. This should be based on our recommendations.

Once the action plan is agreed, we will continue to monitor it. If the Labour Party fails to live up to its commitments in the legally binding action plan, then we may take enforcement action.
